In the first four months of 2024, Ningxia exported 1,331.2 tonnes of goji berries, a 15.3 percent increase in volume and a 16.9 percent increase in value compared to the same period in 2023. The top destinations for Chinese goji berries are Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, and ASEAN countries.
The product range has expanded dramatically. Where once goji berries were exported almost exclusively as dried fruit, there are now over 120 goji-related products on the market, including medicines, beverages, health supplements, and cosmetics. Online retail has been a major driver: Ningxia goji online sales reached 1.53 billion yuan in 2024, accounting for 61.3 percent of China’s national online market share for goji products.
The Superfood Bubble and TikTok Health Trends
Goji berries did not rise alone. They rode the broader wave of the superfood phenomenon, a trend that has transformed niche traditional foods into global commodities. Quinoa, chia seeds, acai berries, spirulina, and matcha all followed similar trajectories. The pattern is familiar: a traditional food with documented health benefits is discovered by Western wellness influencers, repackaged with aspirational branding, and marketed as a solution to modern health anxieties.
Social media has supercharged this cycle. TikTok, in particular, has become the primary engine of superfood discovery.
